Yoga Tummo
History of Tibetan Tummo
Origins of Tummo (by Patrick Daubard)
Tummo is the first of the 6 Yogas of Naropa :
- Tummo, the art of developing inner warmth
- Gyoulé, doctrine of the illusory body
- Mi.lam, dream path
- Eu.sel, clear light
- Bardo, intermediate state, after death
- Po.wa, practice of transference of consciousness
The Six Yogas of Naropa describe a set of advanced meditations compiled during the time of Naropa (1016-1100), designed to help attain the state of enlightenment.
Naropa received these teachings from his master Tilopa (988 – 1069), a teaching that was infused into Tilopa by the Dakini (inspiring deity) Carpo Sangmo.
The teachings then passed from Naropa to Marpa (1012-1097) and finally from Marpa to Milarepa (1040-1123).
More recently, the works of Alexandra David-Neel have introduced Westerners to these practices.
